Stair Railing Replacement Options
A replacement can be as small as new spindles under the old handrail or as big as tearing out everything down to the treads. Price the smallest change that gets the look and safety you want before pricing a full tear-out.

Baluster and spindle replacement
A baluster swap leaves the rail you hold and the posts at each end where they are, and changes only the infill underneath, which is the smaller job of the two. The new balusters have to close the gaps to today's spacing, which on an older stair can mean more balusters than came out.
- Install, balusters only: $1,200 to $1,500 (HomeGuide).
- Parts: $3 to $17 a baluster (HomeAdvisor).

Banister and handrail replacement
A worn, wobbly or undersized handrail can be replaced on its own, or together with the spindles below it. A new rail has to fit a hand and sit at code handrail height, which older rails sometimes don't. If the newel post at the bottom is loose too, fix or replace it in the same visit, since the handrail ties into it.
- Banister plus spindles: $300 to $1,000 (Fixr).
- Standard 10-foot length of railing: $300 to $700 (Fixr).

Full replacement with a new material
Changing material, say wood to glass or a dated metal railing to cable, is a full tear-out: posts, rail and infill all come out, and the new system anchors into the stair. That's where the HomeGuide range stretches from $500 to over $15,000. The material pages break down each one: glass, aluminum, wrought iron.
- Replacement, start to top: $500 for simple wood to $15,000 or more for cable or glass (HomeGuide).
- By stair shape (Angi, new installs): straight $900 to $3,000; curved or spiral $2,400 to $6,000.

Exterior railing replacement on concrete steps
If the old posts have rusted where they meet the concrete, expect concrete work too. Rust takes up more room than the steel it came from, so a corroding post can crack and spall the concrete around it, and the steps need patching before new posts go in. Aluminum, or galvanized steel under a powder coat, holds up better outdoors than bare painted steel (finish choices).
- Concrete: ask whether patching the old post holes is in the price.

Permits for Stair Railing Replacement in Pompano Beach
Plan on a permit. The Florida Building Code requires one before anyone will "construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish" a building or structure, and its permit-exempt list covers gas, mechanical and plumbing items only, not railings. Minor repairs can go ahead without a permit only with the building official's approval, and not if they remove or change any required means of egress.

The code in effect on the application date governs. Florida's 9th edition takes effect December 31, 2026.
Who pulls the permit matters: get it named on the quote, along with who books the final inspection.
Who Can Replace a Stair Railing: Florida Licensing
Pompano Beach's position is plain: if the work is regulated under the Florida Building Code, a valid State of Florida contractor license is still required. Since HB 735, many local Broward license categories (flooring, paver installation and others) no longer count for permits, so a county card alone isn't enough.
No railing license class
Florida statute defines residential, building, general and specialty contractors but no railing-specific class.Handyman limits
The small-job exemption in Florida's contractor law is narrow; the repair page spells it out.Contract paperwork
On a home job over $2,500, the contract must carry the recovery fund notice, and a deposit over 10% starts a 30-day permit clock.
Ask for the license number on the quote and check it with the state before you sign.
Stair Railing Replacement Timeline
The tear-out and install are the short part; the calendar mostly goes to paperwork and parts.
STEP 01
Measure and written quote
Expect a visit to see the stairs and what the new posts will anchor into. Ask for the tear-out, the railing and the permit on one written quote.
STEP 02
Deposit and permit
A deposit over 10% puts the contractor on a state permit clock. An HB 803 exemption request, where it applies, gets a city answer within 3 business days.
STEP 03
Parts
Custom aluminum is fabricated per order, and one maker says its lead times vary with project size and finish. Glass is made to measure (glass lead times).
STEP 04
Tear-out, install and inspection
Most stair railings take 5 to 10 hours of labor. Where a permit was pulled, the city inspects the finished railing.
