Deck and Porch Railing Types

Aluminum Deck and Porch Railings
Aluminum doesn't rot like wood or rust like plain iron, the two things that usually end a porch railing outdoors. HomeGuide's one complaint is that it dents. The baked-on finish is what wears, so compare the coating spec between quotes.
- HomeGuide: $50 to $200 a linear foot installed.
- HomeAdvisor deck table: $40 to $70 a linear foot.

Composite Deck Railings
Composite rails are a blend of wood fiber and plastic that looks like painted or stained wood without the sanding. HomeGuide counts composite, along with vinyl, among the best-value railings because of the low upkeep.
- HomeGuide: $25 to $60 a linear foot installed.
- HomeAdvisor: $15 to $30 a linear foot.

Vinyl and PVC Porch Railings
Vinyl is the budget option that never needs paint: light, weatherproof and easy to hose off. HomeGuide's handrail guide warns that strong sun can fade the color over time. Like any railing here, a PVC system is signed off by the city's building official, not a state product list (approval rules).
- HomeGuide: $25 to $60 a linear foot installed.
- HomeAdvisor: $20 to $40 a linear foot.

Wood Deck and Porch Railings
Wood is the cheapest railing to buy and the most work to keep. HomeGuide says it needs sealing, staining or painting every 1 to 2 years, and a wood rail lasts 10 to 25 years against 25 to 30 for the other three materials. It still makes sense on a wood deck or a period porch where an aluminum rail would look out of place.
- HomeGuide: $20 to $50 a linear foot installed.
- HomeAdvisor: $40 to $50 a linear foot.

Deck Railing Cost and Timeline
HomeGuide's table for a single 10-foot section shows how far apart the materials sit:
Wood or vinyl
$200 to $600 for 10 feet.Metal or composite
$250 to $2,500 for 10 feet.Cable or glass
$600 to $6,000 for 10 feet.
Taking off the old railing may or may not be in the price, depending on the contractor, so ask. The install is quick: 2 to 4 hours for a short straight run, more for a full deck perimeter. Most of the calendar goes to the city permit, which HomeGuide notes most cities require for installing or replacing a deck railing.
When a Deck or Porch Needs a Railing
A porch or deck floor more than 30 inches above the ground needs a guard at least 36 inches tall at a house (guard rules). The steps are a separate question: four or more risers need a handrail at code handrail height, even on a low porch. Where the deck wraps a pool, the railing may also be part of the pool barrier, which has its own height and gap limits. Within about a mile of salt water, ask for 316 stainless screws and brackets (why) whatever the railing is made of.
