Aluminum Railing Types for Stairs, Porches and Walkways
Aluminum railings are sold as extruded systems: posts, rails and pickets cut from long shapes and finished before they reach the site. One picket railing maker forms every part from 6063 or 6005A alloy. The real choices are the infill and the finish.

Aluminum picket railing
Vertical pickets between a top and bottom rail are the plainest aluminum railing, and the simplest to fit on a set of entry steps. The gap between pickets has to pass the code sphere test, so a quote for a stair should show the gap, not only the picket size.
- Installed: $50 to $200 a linear foot (HomeGuide).
- Alloys: 6063-T5, T52 or T6, or 6005A-T61, at the picket maker above.

Aluminum railing with glass infill
Swap the pickets for glass and the aluminum frame still carries the top rail. The glass is the part with rules of its own: laminated in most Florida guards (glass rules). One maker's figures show the frame metal matters too: 9/16-inch laminated glass on aluminum posts costs $300 to $495 a foot, against $340 to $545 on 304 stainless posts.
- Product only, laminated on aluminum posts: $300 to $495 a foot at one maker.

Aluminum handrails
A post-mounted or wall-mounted aluminum handrail is the low-cost answer for short entry steps that need something to hold rather than a full guard. HomeGuide's 2026 handrail guide prices aluminum at $40 to $60 a linear foot installed, the same band as steel. Grip size and mounting height follow the handrail code.

Black and colored powder-coated aluminum
Black, white or bronze, the railing underneath is the same; color is a finish choice. Powder coating is sprayed on electrostatically and cured with heat, which builds a thicker coat than liquid paint without runs. That cure happens in the shop, so ask what the installer uses to touch up a scratch made during the install.
- Finish to ask for: AAMA 2605 for outdoor railings (the grades are explained below).

Why Pompano Beach homeowners call Pompano Stair Railing
- One local railing installer per request, not a call list
- Free to homeowners: no referral fee
- Ask for material, finish and hardware grade in writing
- Permit and inspection named on the quote
Aluminum Railing Cost: What Changes the Quote
Length, infill and finish set the price. A plain picket rail on a straight run of entry steps sits near the bottom of HomeGuide's $50 to $200 range; glass infill, a custom color and a stair with turns move it toward the top.
Per foot installed
$50 to $200 for stair and deck aluminum (HomeGuide); $40 to $70 (HomeAdvisor deck table).Labor
HomeAdvisor counts 5 to 10 hours for a typical stair railing and budgets $70 to $150 an hour for a general contractor.Lead time
the picket maker above custom-fabricates each order, and says lead times vary by project size and finish.
HomeGuide also notes that aluminum dents more easily than steel. On a busy entry stair, a heavier picket or a thicker top rail is worth asking about.
Aluminum Railing Finishes: AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605
The finish grade is the one line on an aluminum quote that predicts how it will look in ten years. The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) sets three tiers for coatings on aluminum, and the higher two are judged on outdoor exposure in South Florida.
AAMA 2603
The interior, light-commercial and residential grade, under 1 mil thick; a one-year South Florida weathering test is optional.AAMA 2604
A factory-applied coating over 1.2 mils; reported as the five-year exposure tier.AAMA 2605
The top tier: a factory coating over 1.2 mils that must pass a 10-year South Florida exposure test with fade of 5 ΔE or less, chalk rated 8 or better and at least 50% gloss retained, plus salt-spray and humidity tests.
Ask which spec the finish meets and whether it was factory-applied. "Powder-coated" on its own tells you the method, not the grade.
Aluminum Railings Near Salt Air in Pompano Beach
Aluminum doesn't rust: a thin oxide layer forms on the surface and protects the metal underneath. The weak spot near the ocean is where it touches other metals. Aluminum in contact with stainless steel in salt water can corrode quickly unless the two are electrically isolated, so ask how the installer separates stainless anchors and screws from the aluminum posts.
Engineering
In Broward's hurricane zone the code sends aluminum design to the Aluminum Design Manual and its welds to AWS D1.2.Who approves it
Pompano Beach's building official, not a statewide product list (approval rules).Permit
A new or replaced exterior railing usually needs a city permit.
A beachside balcony and a stair a mile inland see very different salt loads (distance bands), and the fasteners and finish should follow the address.
