Stair railing in Pompano Beach, FL

Glass Railing in Pompano Beach, FL

  • Typical cost: Angi's 2026 guide puts glass railing at about $200 to $500 a linear foot, and $200 to $650 a foot on a staircase.
  • Glass type: a Florida guard generally needs laminated glass, 1/4 inch or thicker, which Angi prices at about $500 a foot against $330 for tempered.
  • Lead time: production at one glass railing maker averages 10 to 15 days before shipping; the install itself takes a few hours to a few days.
  • Deposit: if more than 10% is paid up front, Florida law starts a 30-day clock for the contractor's permit application.

Pompano Stair Railing puts you in touch with an installer who fits frameless, standoff and post-mounted glass on stairs, balconies and decks. Describe the run and the look you want, and that installer phones you to arrange a measure and a written quote for the glass, the hardware and the permit.

Glass Railing Types: Frameless, Standoff and Post-Mounted

The way the glass is held decides most of the look and a good share of the price. All three systems below can go on interior stairs, exterior steps and balconies; what changes is the hardware you see.

Frameless laminated glass panels set in a continuous aluminum base shoe on a staircase

Frameless glass in a base shoe

A frameless railing clamps each panel into a continuous metal channel, the base shoe, fixed to the floor or the stair stringer. Nothing interrupts the glass. With no posts to carry a rail, though, Florida's code still wants a top rail or handrail on structural glass panels unless the laminated glass passed the ASTM E2353 test.

  • Glass: laminated, 1/4 inch minimum (code section below).
  • Product-only price at one maker: glass systems run $170 to $680 a foot before installation.

Standoff-mounted glass

Standoff glass is bolted through the panel to round pins fixed to the face of the stair or slab, so the glass hangs outside the walking surface and the floor stays clear. It suits a stair stringer or a balcony edge with solid backing. Every pin is a drilled hole in tempered glass, and tempered glass can't be drilled or trimmed after it's made, so the pin layout is fixed at the factory.

  • Labor: HomeGuide puts glass railing labor at $50 to $200 a linear foot on top of materials.

Post-and-panel glass

Posts every few feet carry the top rail and the glass is clamped between them as infill, so the glass isn't holding anything up. One maker that publishes its prices starts its range with post systems. Posts come in aluminum or stainless, and near the beach the grade matters (316 hardware).

  • Product-only price at one maker: 3/8-inch tempered with aluminum posts $170 to $290 a foot; 9/16-inch laminated with aluminum posts $300 to $495.

Glass with a top rail or handrail cap

A cap rail along the top edge gives a hand something to hold, and it keeps the line standing if a panel breaks. On a stair it often doubles as the handrail, which then has to sit at code handrail height and be graspable.

Glass Railing Cost: What Moves the Price

Laminated glass and the number of feet decide most of a glass railing quote. Angi's 2026 averages put laminated at about $500 a foot against $330 for tempered, and on a staircase $530 against $360. Because Florida guards generally have to be laminated, use the laminated figure when you compare quotes, not the tempered one.

  • Whole job (Angi)

a glass railing averages about $7,000, from $3,000 to over $20,000; a glass stair railing averages $7,400, most between $3,500 and $11,300.
  • Stairway rate (HomeAdvisor)

$500 to $850 a linear foot, and $10,000 to $17,000 to rail both sides of a 10-foot flight.
  • Indoor vs outdoor

HomeGuide says outdoor glass costs slightly more because of thicker glass and stainless posts and hardware.
  • Hardware life

the glass lasts indefinitely with care, the hardware 20 to 25 years (Angi).

Ask each installer to name the glass build-up (for example 9/16-inch laminated) and the post or shoe metal on the quote. Two quotes for "glass railing" can be a full grade apart.

Florida Glass Railing Code: Laminated Glass and Top Rails

Florida's code treats glass in any guard or railing as a hazardous location, whatever its size, and designs it with a load factor of four. The Building code spells out the rest in Section 2407, and in the hurricane zone the Residential code sends glass back to that chapter, so the same rules reach houses here.

  • Laminated, 1/4 inch minimum

Plies of fully tempered or heat-strengthened glass. Single tempered glass is allowed only where there's no walking surface below, or it's protected from falling glass.
  • Exterior infill

Glass in exterior railing infill panels or balusters must be laminated.
  • Top rail

Structural glass baluster panels need an attached top rail or handrail held by at least three panels, or otherwise supported if one fails. Tested laminated glass (ASTM E2353) is the exception.
  • Why laminated

Its plastic interlayer (PVB or a similar film) keeps broken glass from falling in large sharp pieces; tempered glass is about four times stronger than plain glass but crumbles into small chunks when it breaks.

Exterior glass in Broward also has to meet hurricane-zone wind and impact testing (approval rules), and the guard height and baluster gaps follow the code-height guard rules.

Deposits, Contracts and Lead Times for Glass Railings

Glass is ordered to measured sizes, so expect a deposit and a wait between the measure and the install. Florida law sets rules for both money and paperwork on a home job.

  • Deposit over 10%

Under F.S. 489.126, a contractor who takes more than 10% of the contract price up front on residential work must apply for the permits within 30 days of payment and start within 90 days after the permits issue. It applies whether or not the person is licensed.
  • Recovery fund notice

Under F.S. 489.1425, a residential contract over $2,500 must include the Florida Homeowners' Construction Recovery Fund statement. If it's missing, ask why.
  • Fabrication

At one glass and cable railing maker, production averages 10 to 15 days, transit not included; the same maker quotes 8 to 12 weeks for a stair-plus-glass product once framing is ready.
  • Install

A few hours to a few days on site (HomeGuide).

Get the glass spec, the deposit amount and the expected delivery week in writing before you pay. A city permit usually comes into it too.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a glass railing cost per linear foot?

Angi's 2026 guide puts most glass railings at $200 to $500 a linear foot, and glass on a staircase at $200 to $650. HomeAdvisor's stairway figure is higher, $500 to $850 a foot. The glass type moves the price most: Angi averages laminated at about $500 a foot and tempered at $330.

Is tempered glass enough, or does the code want laminated?

In most cases, yes. The Florida Building Code says glass in a handrail or guard must be laminated, made from tempered or heat-strengthened plies, at least 1/4 inch thick. Single tempered glass is allowed only where nobody walks underneath, and glass in exterior railing infill must be laminated.

Can a glass railing be built without a top rail?

Only with tested laminated panels. Florida's code wants structural glass baluster panels to carry an attached top rail or handrail that stays up if one panel breaks. The exception is laminated glass with two or more equal plies of the same type, tested to ASTM E2353.

How long does it take to install a glass railing?

The install is short: HomeGuide says a few hours to a few days. Most of the wait comes first. Tempered glass can't be cut after it's made, so panels are ordered to measured sizes, and production at one maker averages 10 to 15 days, not counting shipping.

What wears out first on a glass railing, the glass or the hardware?

Angi says the glass itself lasts indefinitely with proper care, while the hardware usually gives 20 to 25 years. Near salt air, ask which stainless grade the posts, clamps and base shoe use, since that hardware wears out first.
