Handrail Installation Types

Handrails fixed to the stairwell wall
A rail on brackets along the wall is the most common handrail and the cheapest. It has to clear the wall by at least 1 1/2 inches so a hand fits around it, and it can't stick out more than 4 1/2 inches into the stair. An integrated handrail costs more in Fixr's figures.
- Wall-mounted materials: $25 to $40 per linear foot (Fixr).
- Integrated handrail materials: $30 to $100 per linear foot (Fixr).

Second-side handrails for older adults
Florida's residential code asks for a handrail on one side of a home's stair. The National Institute on Aging goes further for older adults: handrails on both sides of any stairs, tightly fastened, and used on every trip up or down.
- Typical second rail: priced like any other run, about $80 a foot on HomeGuide's average.

Handrails on top of a guard
On an open stair, the top of the guard often doubles as the handrail. When it does, it has to sit at 34 to 38 inches like any handrail and still be graspable. Wide decorative caps over 6 1/4 inches around need a finger recess on both sides. The code allows a volute or turnout over the bottom tread, and lets the rail rise above 38 inches at fittings and bends between flights.

Commercial and multifamily stair handrails
Stairs in condo buildings, offices and shops follow the Florida Building Code, Building, which wants a handrail on each side of the flight. Where the rail isn't continuous to the next flight, it carries on 12 inches level past the top riser and slopes one tread's depth past the bottom one. The rail also has to be fixed so it can't turn in its brackets. Ramps and stairs on an accessible route pick up further rules on the ADA handrails page.
