Stair Railing Repair Types
Five kinds of damage are covered below. The fix, and whether it's worth fixing, depends on which one you have.

Loose handrails and newel posts
A handrail that shifts under your hand can mean a loose bracket or a newel post that has worked free at its base. Code wants guards and handrails to hold a 200-pound load at the top (guard rules), so a railing that moves when you lean on it is a safety repair, not a cosmetic one.
- Handrail repair: $100 to $500 (Fixr).
- Newel post repair: $100 to $350 per post (Fixr).

Rusted posts and base plates on concrete steps
Outdoor steel posts can fail where they meet the concrete. Rust takes up far more room than the steel it replaces, and inside a concrete step that swelling cracks the concrete and breaks off flakes, so the repair is often two jobs: the post and the step around it. HomeGuide says a scratch in an iron railing's coating has to be repaired quickly or the iron rusts, and damaged galvanizing is repaired to ASTM A780 with zinc solder, zinc-rich paint or zinc spray.
- Ask for: how the new post or base will be anchored and how the old hole will be patched.
- Finishes that last outdoors: see wrought iron finishes.

Cracked or broken glass panels
Laminated and tempered glass fail differently, and that decides the repair. A laminated panel stays in one piece on its interlayer, and Angi says small surface damage on it can often be fixed in place. Tempered glass can't be cut or reworked once it's made and breaks into small granular chunks, so a damaged tempered panel gets replaced. A replacement panel in a Florida guard generally has to be laminated (glass rules), and exterior glass in Broward has its own impact approval rules.
- Glass stair repair by a specialist: $200 to $800 (Fixr).

Broken welds and bent metal
A cracked weld at a post or a bent picket can often be cut out and rewelded instead of replacing the run, if the metal around it is sound. Steel "wrought iron" railings are mild steel and weld as such. Aluminum is different work: in Broward's hurricane zone, structural aluminum welding follows the AWS D1.2 aluminum welding code, so ask whether the crew welds aluminum or will swap the damaged section instead.
- Welding and fabrication time: Angi's labor rate is $70 to $150 an hour.

Faded, chalky or peeling finishes
A railing that's structurally sound but chalking, fading or peeling needs a refinish, not a repair. HomeAdvisor puts professional stair refinishing at $321 to $1,255, about $788 on average; stripping and recoating metal is its own job, covered on railing refinishing and powder coating.

Stair Railing Repair Cost and Paperwork
Repairs are priced by the item or by the hour, so get the scope written down before work starts: which posts, which panels, what happens to the concrete.
Labor
$50 to $150 an hour for general railing work (Angi, 2026); $70 to $150 for iron fabricators (Angi).Small jobs
Florida's contractor law exempts casual, minor work under $2,500 in total, but not if it's part of a larger job or the person advertises as a contractor.Permits
A repair to a structure needs a permit unless the building official approves it as an ordinary minor repair, and a minor repair can't remove a load-bearing support or change a required means of egress. Pompano Beach fees are on the replacement page.
Repair or Replace a Stair Railing?
Repair makes sense when the damage is local and the rest of the railing is sound. Replacement makes sense when the problem is the whole railing: the material, the gaps or the age.
Repair
One loose post or newel, a broken weld, a single damaged laminated panel, coating chips caught before rust spreads.Replace
Rust at several post bases, a tempered glass railing losing panels, or wood or iron that has reached the end of its life. HomeGuide gives wood railings 10 to 15 years, aluminum 20 to 30, and wrought iron or stainless 50 or more with maintenance.Price check
Fixr puts replacing a standard 10-foot length at $300 to $700, which is close to the cost of repairing two newel posts at the top of its range.
A replacement railing is built to today's code, including the current gap and height rules, which a repaired old one may not meet. Price both if you're on the fence.
What to Send With a Repair Request
A clear request gets a clearer first answer on the phone. Before you send yours, gather a few things.

One wide shot of the whole railing and a close-up of the damage: the base of a loose post, the crack in a panel, the rust line at the concrete.Material
Wood, iron or steel, aluminum, glass or stainless, and whether the glass is laminated or tempered if you know.Inside or outside
Interior stair, entry steps, balcony or pool deck.Building type
House, townhouse or condo. In a condo, check your association's rules on balcony and common-stair railings before booking. How it happened
Storm, impact or slow wear. It helps the crew judge whether one part failed or the whole railing is tired.
