Dock Railing Types

Stainless Steel Cable Dock Railings
Cable keeps the water view open from the dock and the house behind it. On the water, every part counts: posts, cable, swaged fittings and fasteners should all be at least 316 stainless, and a rail in the splash zone may call for a higher alloy. Cable costs are on the cable railing page.
- Install time (HomeGuide): 1 to 3 days for a cable railing.

Aluminum Dock Railings
Aluminum doesn't rust the way plain iron does outdoors. Its weak points are dents and the finish, which is where the coating grade matters.
- HomeGuide installed range: $50 to $200 a linear foot.
- Lifespan: about 25 to 30 years in HomeGuide's deck figures.

Composite and PVC Dock Railings
Composite and PVC rails match composite dock boards and skip the sealing or staining that wood needs every year or two. PVC railing systems sit outside the state product approval program, so the local building official signs off on them (approval rules).
- HomeGuide installed range: $25 to $60 a linear foot.

Seawall Railings
A railing along the seawall cap keeps people back from the drop to the water at the edge of the yard. Where that drop is more than 30 inches, the guard height and gap rules are a sensible target, and the building official decides whether they apply. The city's engineering permit for seawall work asks for signed and sealed drawings, so ask who is designing the post anchoring into the cap.

Dock Railing Permits in Pompano Beach
Waterfront work here has more approvals than a railing on land:
City engineering permit
Dock and seawall permits need signed and sealed engineered drawings, the application and a contract or schedule of values. The fee is 4% of the cost of the work.Broward County license
The county requires a license before any work in, on, over or under its waters.Dock limits
A fixed or floating dock may reach into a canal 10% of the canal's width or 8 feet, whichever is less, and not within the 5-foot side setback.Older buildings
Docks and seawalls attached to a building in the city's safety inspection program are inspected with it (inspection rules).
Dock Railing Materials, Cost and Timeline
Salt decides the material grade. IMOA's stainless selection system scores a site with salt spray or occasional splashing higher even than one within 100 feet of the shore, and at the top of its scale it points past 316 to duplex 2205 or similar alloys. Washing the rail with fresh water at least monthly brings that score down, so a rinse schedule is worth agreeing on before choosing the grade. For lifespan, HomeGuide's deck numbers put aluminum and composite at 25 to 30 years, beyond the top of wood's range.
